  • Our Happy Place

The Ledding library has always been such a big part of my life. I remember being a kid there, curled up in a corner of the basement kids section reading Garfield comics and boxcar children, loving that cranky old blue elevator. I remember seeing a concert outside in the 1990s where the whole family played the violin, like all 7 of them.

I kept going all through my 20s, albeit sporadically and more riddled with late fees. I loved finding new albums to listen to by artists I’d never heard of.

I kept going all through my 20s, albeit sporadically and more riddled with late fees. I loved finding new albums to listen to by artists I’d never heard of.

Now that I have kids, the library is a weekly ritual we all love. As a new mom, I loved choosing some picture books while my toddler played with duplos and board books. Now my oldest winds up curled in the corner with her own chapter books and graphic novels, just like I used to, while I do a puzzle or a puppet show with my youngest.

When we moved and had to cut out internet for our smaller budget, it was manageable because we had the library- we could look things up, print things out, and check out movies and tv shows to watch.

We love the scavenger hunts, the community events like dragon dances and concerts and readings and movies. We love the library of things and being able to try things for a couple weeks that we probably wouldn’t buy- like a button press or a bread maker. We especially love the board games.

And I still love going there by myself sometimes, too- reveling in the peace and positive, kind energy of a quiet place to journal or read that’s not out to make any money.

The Ledding Library has been one of my best happy places since I can remember, like an old friend, and I’m unspeakably grateful for it.

  • Hours

I love the library, but not their hours so much. In the last year, they have cut back hours and they are confusing. Some days they close at 7, some at 6, and some at 5.

  • 4 generations enjoying the library

by mer, about 2 months ago

My parents were both avid readers and utilized the Ledding library. They ensured my brother and I had our own library cards. We were proud of those cards and the responsibility we took to care for library books. In middle and high school the library also became the hub to study with friends after school. It was also where I had my first "real " job as a Library Page when I was 16. Back then it required passing a civil service exam.

Fast forward to when I moved back to Milwaukie to raise a family. I quickly obtained a new library card. We frequented the children's library and story time weekly and often multiple times in a week. When my kids were old enough they got their own library cards. When my grandkids came along, they also enjoyed trips to the Ledding library and story time.

The Ledding library remains a treasured resource for families and the community. It has been wonderful to see how the library has evolved with the services that are now offered. I have a lot of respect for our library staff and their dedication to providing high quality services to the community.

  • I love the library

by Chloe, about 2 months ago
I love the library so much. It has the best children’s section in town. It’s truly a treasure. I use the library to spend time with my kids, share seeds, and check out books. What an incredible resource. As a teen I spent a lot of time in libraries escaping my home. Grateful I can always call the library home.

  • Seed Sharing

Our library is such a treasure for the community. I especially love the seed‑sharing stand—it’s such a thoughtful, creative way to bring people together and encourage gardening. It’s one of those little touches that makes the library feel truly special!

  • Incredible Space for Little Ones

Ledding Library is such a gift to our community. The kids’ section is spacious, welcoming, and beautifully designed. It’s an incredible space for little ones to explore and fall in love with books. Story time has been a crucial mid-morning activity for me and my child. It gets us out of the house, gives my little one fun, engaging learning time, and gives me a chance to connect with other parents. On top of that, the staff are always so friendly and genuinely helpful. We couldn’t ask for a better experience.

  • COVID Rental

by gillr, about 2 months ago

I rented Eileen Stark's Real Gardens Grow Natives on January 26th, 2020. At the time, I was only mildly interested in learning how to kill my grass lawn (I do not enjoy mowing one bit) and do better for the environment with native plants. As the world changed, my due date also changed until the end of July. Suddenly with loads of time on my hands, I devoured this book. As the world changed, my due date also changed until the end of July. Suddenly with loads of time on my hands, I devoured this book. This single library checkout is responsible for me changing careers (now work in environmental protection), becoming a better member of my community as a routine volunteer, and brightening my life with a whole new appreciation of humanity's role in nature. Moreover, a couple hundred native plantings later, I now enjoy watching a flood of interesting wildlife like birds and butterflies visit my yard every single day. What was just a random book rental became one of the most formative, rewarding decisions of my life. I have Ledding Library to thank for empowering me with access to knowledge (and Eileen Stark for writing a fantastic book).

  • Finding a new home

by Marcy, about 2 months ago
We left our home of 40 years, moved away from friends and community to downsize and be by our daughter. The library helped us plug into our new community. I found new friends in one of the book clubs, and appreciate The Library of Things to borrow tools that we don’t have anymore. All the staff are helpful and kind. It is a beautiful place to just take a breather.

  • The Heartbeat of the Community

Ledding Library is the most vital community resource in Milwaukie. It's really a treasure -- great book selection, lovely to visit with lots of natural light, natural wood, comfortable chairs, and ease of finding things, a very efficient hold system, and fabulous programs that cover a wide variety of interests. I feel very fortunate to have this resource within walking distance from my home in Milwaukie.
