Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan

Consultation has concluded

Icy city streets

This is a chance to provide feedback about the Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP). The NHMP is an opportunity for the City of Milwaukie to review and consider natural hazards that may affect its residents and businesses. The plan includes a ranking of potential hazards, description of how they may affect Milwaukie, and a list of action items to be taken to improve the city's ability to prepare for those hazards.

While not every proposed change will be included in the final plan, the city is collecting community feedback, and will consider and respond to comments and questions. After reviewing the NHMP, please consider completing the first three engagement tools below (Quick Poll, Mapping Exercise and Action Items Discussion). Additional questions can also be added to the Questions tool.

The NHMP is only one aspect of the city's emergency management strategy, and updating it every five years allows the city to remain eligible for certain federal emergency management grants. Please note, the NHMP does not contain any information about how the city will respond to hazards that are not naturally occurring.

Feedback and questions can also be shared by contacting the staff person listed under "Who's Listening" below or to the right (depending on the device being used).

The city is excited to hear from you!

Should you have questions after reviewing the plan please add them here and staff will respond.

  • I answered the poll question and while I have enough food set aside for 2 weeks, I do not have 2 weeks of water set aside yet, and I may or may not have 2 weeks worth of medications. Insurance doesn't always allow to keep a 2 week supply on hand. I also try to keep a supply of batteries on hand for flashlights, and alternate fuel for cooking. I know not to use propane and some other forms of cooking in non ventilated areas, but am prepared to have camp stove vented out an open window, regardless of the outside temperatures, to aid in cooking.

Thank you for that information. The two week guideline may not be attainable for every household. It is included because the more ready each household is to survive following a disaster, the more emergency responders will be able to focus on other tasks.

  • Thank you for doing the detailed report. I have a few questions: 1. Robbie Graves, Police Captain, retired? He is still on the HMAC 2. Is PSAC members under HMAC, so they can take the info to their NDA? 3. Is Annie Ross House now Northwest Housing Alternatives? It's still showing on the report. 4. Is Milwaukie Art and Artisan Market is running? Please advise.

    Hi Susanna,

Thanks for writing in. I'll use your same numbers to answer.

    1. Captain Graves is retired. As of now, Chief Strait is the only person from the Police Department still on the HMAC. I have left Captain Graves' name because he was part of the early HMAC discussions and I want to respect that contribution.

    2. The Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) is a standalone entity, but this plan has been sent to PSAC for review. I will also be sending the plan to the Neighborhood District Association (NDA) chairs and vice chairs so that they can help to spread the word.

    3. The Annie Ross House is operated by Northwest Housing Alternatives.

    4.  I don't think the Milwaukie Art and Artisan Market is still operating. I have pulled it from the list. Thanks for catching that!

Please let me know if you have any other questions or comments.
